Confirmed: Withholding Employee PFML Contributions Begins With First Paycheck in July

Wage withholding for the MA Paid Family and Medical Leave law is fast approaching — beginning July 1, 2019 to be exact.  A common question from employers is whether employers should begin withholding starting with the first paycheck issued in July (which may include payment for services rendered prior to July 1, 2019) or wait until the following paycheck which would include only time earned on or after July 1, 2019.

I posed this question to the MA Department of family and Medical Leave via email.  According to the DFML, “Contributions will be due on all wages paid on or after July 1, 2019. Depending upon your payroll schedule, this may include payment for services rendered prior to July 1, 2019.”

Thus, employers should plan to withhold employee contributions beginning with the first paycheck issued on or after July 1, 2019.
